The Medical Coding Apprenticeship Program is a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship that provides structured occupational training and work-based learning in professional medical coding. Apprentices develop competencies in ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, healthcare reimbursement, compliance, documentation review, and coding guidelines. The program prepares apprentices to accurately assign medical codes and perform professional coding functions in healthcare settings.
Candidates must hold an active industry-recognized medical coding certification, such as the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). Candidates holding a CPC-A (apprentice designation) are not eligible for entry into the program.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year, based on apprenticeship opportunities, employer availability, and participant eligibility. There is no fixed annual application deadline.
